Recently, the President’s administrative council came forward to talk about their plans to implement a ‘block granting’ system, through which the state government will now be given grants to run the Medicaid for the people of that state. This is not the first time that the Republican Party has come forward in favor of the ‘block granting’ system. In the past, the system has been spoken about, but never implemented on the scale President Trump plans to. There has been a lot of debate about whether or not this method will be useful to the state governments and if the state governments will be able to handle the cost of Medicaid for the people living there.
Currently, Medicaid covers over seventy-five million children and adults all over the country. People are dependent on this coverage to handle their medical expenses. Traditionally, the state-supported Medicaid in conjunction with the Federal government, which made handling the financing of Medicaid a lot easier. The federal government would provide these grants to the states depending on the poverty rate of the people living there. States like Mississippi have the federal government contributing to around three-thirds of their Medicaid budget, while the ratio in more well-developed states is far less. This flexibility has enabled all the states in the country to provide a uniform code of Medicaid. With the introduction of the new system, the states are entirely dependent on themselves to support the Medicaid plans, which may end up having more inconsistencies in the way the system works.

So what are the odds of this plan falling into place? The Republican Party has time and again expressed interest in implementing this system.
